The creative aspect: how do we design green walls?

The creative aspect: how do we design green walls?

When making custom green plant walls, we provide a comprehensive service - we not only deliver the product to the indicated place and deal with installation and maintenance, but also prepare the entire project from scratch. Each project is unique and developed with the needs of a specific customer in mind. Find out how the process of designing green walls looks like behind the scenes - below we lift the veil of secrecy and reveal a little something about the creative aspect of the 4Nature System activity.

Tailor-made projects

We value individual solutions adjusted to the space, its size and type, as well as customer preferences, so before we even start designing, we make a detailed inquiry with the customer. Together, we consider the best place in the office or hall for a vertical garden made of live plants, and pre-define its dimensions. We also ask about technical details - sewage system, the possibility of making water connections, lighting conditions.

Only after establishing similar details can we start the creative part of the work, i.e. designing. Here, we also consult them with our customers. Some people prefer to have a strong influence on the appearance of the project - then we together discuss the concept, review the inspirations and decide on a ready-made list of guidelines, e.g. using specific plant species. Others give us a free hand - in such a situation we prepare a concept of the plant wall from A to Z. We are then not limited by anything except the arranged space and our imagination!

What plants are included in our projects?

The use of healthy and lush specimens from proven suppliers is completely essential for us. Since the seedlings are relatively large and their leaf cover is dense, they are an aesthetic decoration of the office, basically immediately after planting them in the pocket of the 4Nature System module. The ability of given species to improve air quality is no less important.

We offer about 40 species of plants, divided into two price groups. The first, cheaper group includes more standard green ornamental species, such as Epipremnum aurerum and Epipremnum N'Joy, Philodendron scandens and Philodendron Brasil, Chlorophytum comosum, Ficus pumila, Cissus Ellen Danica or Chlorophytum comosum. They are usually the basis of a green wall - most of them are climbing plants that grow rapidly; they have bright leaves and shoots that are easy to prune and shape. The second price group consists of slightly more sophisticated species, including Fatsia japonica, Maranta leuconeura, Anthurium andreanum, Calathea makoyana, Aglaonema commutatum, Clivia minata and Monstera deliciosa. While the species from the first group provide a compact and green background, the plants from the second group introduce interesting variety in the composition - among others due to the colouring of the leaves (such as Maranta or Aglaonema) and colourful flowers (such as Anthurium or Clivia).

Green jungle or multi-coloured accents?

Usually, a vertical wall takes the form of a rectangle, while more and more often there are designs with a more sophisticated form, e.g. the upper edge of the garden is stepped, which is possible thanks to the structure and shape of our modules. The plant arrangement itself can be arranged in countless ways. The individual preferences of the customer are of key importance here, so even at the stage of preliminary arrangements, we review various projects and try to determine what types of projects best meet the customer's expectations. The most popular are vertical gardens in the form of a jungle or bush - with a natural arrangement of greenery, or with plants creating a specific pattern. Apart from projects dominated primarily by green species, we also make walls with distinct colour accents. On request, we can also offer a simple uniform composition of one type of plant.

Art or craft?

Vertical gardens are created by landscape architects. It resembles painting pictures and requires spatial imagination, a sense of aesthetics and artistic talent. Waves of colourful vegetation form unique mosaics - the play of shades creates original living works, always different from previous compositions. In this approach, vertical gardens are basically a form of the arrangement art.

Projects of vertical gardens are created in a graphics programme, and landscape architects draw their inspiration from various sources, including, above all, nature. At the same time, apart from aesthetics and artistic vision, technical aspects also need to be taken into account. Since plants have different watering requirements, this should be taken into account when determining which will be at the top, in the centre, and at the bottom of a green wall. Climbing species, on the other hand, may be suitable for covering certain elements that the customer would prefer to hide. Designing vertical gardens covers not only an artistic vision, but also specific workshop skills. The culmination of the creative process are aesthetic arrangements that change and enliven the space, effectively smuggling nature into the interior.
